ACS Urges Business Secretary to Make Employment Rights Bill Work for Businesses

ACS has written to new Business Secretary Peter Kyle MP, urging the Government to consider Lords amendments to the Employment Rights Bill that would make the Bill more workable and pragmatic for local shops and other businesses.

The Employment Rights Bill, first published in October 2024, set out 28 employment reforms aimed at meeting the Government’s manifesto commitment to ‘make work pay’.

The Government has published the new Employment Rights Bill, outlining 28 individual employment reforms as part of its manifesto commitment to ‘Make Work Pay’.

Local Shops Deliver Secure Employment Opportunities

New evidence from ACS’ Employment Survey and ACS’ Colleague Survey shows the convenience sector continues to deliver secure and flexible employment to 437,000 colleagues across the country.  

98% of colleagues working in the convenience sector are on permanent contracts and as a result 83% of colleagues feel secure in their current role. The majority of colleagues are also drawn from the local community with 47% walking to work with an average commute time of just 13 minutes per day.

Government Releases Good Work Plan

The Government have today published their “Good Work Plan” setting out a new legislative approach to employment rights and status.

The Good Work Plan confirms the Government’s intention to legislate to introduce rights for all workers to request a more predictable and stable contract, the right to a day one written statement for all workers and employees, and improve clarity on employment status workers.
