ACS has reiterated its calls for the Government to take into account the challenges facing small stores ahead of the introduction of a deposit return scheme (DRS).

Speaking at a meeting of the Tidy Britain All Party Parliamentary Group, ACS Government Relations Director Ed Woodall outlined how a well-designed deposit return scheme could work for the convenience sector.

ACS has welcomed a new report from the Environmental Audit Committee on the introduction of a deposit return scheme, recognising a number of challenges faced by small retailers.

The report follows written and oral evidence sessions from stakeholders including ACS, setting out the Committee’s recommendations for a scheme that is workable and sustainable for all retailers and that has a meaningful impact on recycling rates. These include:

ACS has welcomed the long-awaited extension of plastic bag charging to all businesses from today (21 May), which will provide consistency for consumers and further opportunity for retailers to raise money for good causes.

From today in England, the minimum charge for plastic bags stands at 10p per bag, and is applicable to all businesses regardless of size. The plastic bag charge is already applicable to all businesses in Scotland and Wales.

ACS (the Association of Convenience Stores) is encouraging retailers to submit their entries for a new trophy marking the legacy of independent retailer Raj Aggarwal. The trophy will be awarded to retailers who have been exceptional in community retailing and helping their fellow retailers.

Applications are welcome from any convenience store operator, independent retailers and managers of multiple-owned outlets.

To enter, applicants must submit a short film (maximum of 5 minutes), which will show:

Taking place virtually on 25th May, 2 - 4pm, ACS’ Responsible Retailing Forum will explore two big strategic policy issues:

• new regulations on high fat, salt sugar products
• the introduction of new environmental regulations such as deposit return schemes and extended producer responsibility
