ACS: Local Shops Need Government Support to Deal with Impact of Coronavirus

ACS (the Association of Convenience Stores) has written to the Government calling for the introduction of measures to support local shops handle the impact of coronavirus.

ACS outlined key asks of the Government to help local shops mitigate the impact of the coronavirus, which are:

  • Automatic deferral of VAT, employers NICs, business rates, PAYE and corporation tax for at least six months
  • A government fund to compensate businesses impacted by coronavirus
  • Subsidise wages for people laid off as a direct result of the outbreak

ACS chief executive James Lowman said: “Convenience stores are a lifeline for the communities that they serve and they play a crucial role in times of increased demand, particularly as more people isolate at home as a result of coronavirus.

“We need the Government to introduce measures to support convenience stores to enable them to continue providing vital services and products to their customers.”

The latest information from the Government about COVID-19 is available here: https://www.acs.org.uk/advice/covid-19-coronavirus.

ACS is currently preparing guidance for retailers on providing home delivery to local customers in the event of increased demand.
