Minimum Wage Compliance Essential to Level Playing Field for Retailers

ACS called on retailers to ensure that they are fully aware of and compliant with the national minimum wage rates.

Government has published a list of over 100 employers who have fallen short of paying their employees the national minimum wage, with underpayment close to £400,000 in total.

Business minister Nick Boles said: “Employers who fail to pay the minimum wage hurt the living standards of the lowest paid and their families.”

ACS chief executive James Lowman said: “Rates of non-compliance with the national minimum wage are very low in our sector, but we encourage all retailers to ensure that they are aware of changes to wage rates when they occur and to implement those changes immediately. We fully support strong enforcement against those who do not pay their employees the national minimum wage to ensure a level playing field for competing businesses.”

From October 1st this year, the national minimum wage rate rose from £6.50 to £6.70 for employees over the age of 21. Full details of the minimum wage rates are available here: https://www.gov.uk/national-minimum-wage-rates

ACS regularly submits evidence to the Low Pay Commission, the body which advises the government on wage rates. ACS evidence regarding the 2015 wage rate can be viewed here: http://www.acs.org.uk/download/low-pay-commission-consultation-on-the-national-minimum-wage/
