Campaign to Keep Gluten Free Customers Safe

ACS is supporting a campaign from Coeliac UK to raise awareness around gluten free customers and what businesses can do to keep them safe.

Coeliac UK estimate British food businesses are missing out on £100m of gluten free business, and that 90% of people on a gluten free diet ate out in the last month. According to Mintel, the UK gluten free market was estimated to be £247 million in 2015.

Coeliac UK has created guidance for businesses, called ‘Catering gluten free: how to get it right’, which is available for download here. The Food Standards Agency also has a section on gluten free foods on their website, here.

ACS Assured Advice guidance ‘Managing Food Safety and Hygiene’ lists retailers’ responsibilities when handling and serving foods that contain allergenic ingredients, including information on food storage and labelling. The full ACS guidance is available here.

Assured Advice has been developed for convenience store owners by ACS and Bucks/Surrey County Council. By signing up to ACS’ Assured Advice scheme and following the guidance, your store procedures must be respected by ALL local enforcement officers including environmental health, police and trading standards – but you must sign up to the scheme to benefit from this privilege.

Assured Advice is free for full members of ACS – to find out more about becoming a full member, please contact us on 01252 515001.
