ACS have developed guidance to help retailers think about how they can prepare and respond to a robbery incident in store. You can download the guidance in PDF format here or read about it below.
Make sure you are utilising existing security measures to prevent your store premises becoming a target for robbers. Assess your risk by identifying the hazards, deciding who might be harmed and how, and evaluating the risks and deciding on precautions. Make sure you record your findings and implement them, regularly reviewing your policies when possible.
Prepare and protect your store and colleagues by:
- Looking out for anyone acting suspiciously (e.g. waiting outside the store, taking pictures in store, looking around for cameras, asking questions about store security)
- Making sure that you do not discuss security with anyone who does not work in your business
- Ensuring CCTV is working every day and that all cameras remain free from obstruction
- Keeping till floats to a minimum.
- Storing away all cash securely, making sure that nothing is left unattended
In the event of a robbery
- Remain calm and follow the robbers' instructions.
- Raise the alarm if it is safe to do so and get yourself to a safe place.
- Never chase after robbers. When safe, call 999 immediately.
- Close the store and write down a description of the robbery and any information about their getaway vehicle.
