ACS (the Association of Convenience Stores) has launched the National Living Wage Survey 2019 and is calling on retailers to respond.
Responses from the survey will help inform ACS’ submission to the Low Pay Commission’s call for evidence on the wage rates to apply from April 2020. The survey asks for retailers’ views on the potential impact of increased wage rates on their business as well as what retailers have already done to mitigate the cost of the recent increase in NMW and NLW rates. The survey will also inform ACS’ evidence on the future remit for the National Living Wage beyond its 2020 target to reach 60% of median earnings (projected at £8.67).
ACS chief executive James Lowman said: “Employment costs remain by far the biggest cost for most convenience store operators, so this survey is vital in helping us explain to government the potential impact of further changes to wage rates. We are at the heart of an extremely important debate about pay, working practices and conditions, and we need this information to make sure that our members are properly represented in these discussions.”
The rates for the National Living Wage and Minimum Wage from 1st April 2019 are:
- Employee aged 25 and over (NLW rate): £8.21 per hour
- Employee aged 21 and over: £7.70 an hour
- Employee aged 18 to 20: £6.15 an hour
- Employee under 18: £4.35 an hour
- Apprentices: £3.90 an hour
