EU Commission: Tobacco Track and Trace

EU Commission: Tobacco Track and Trace

The EU Commission have launched a consultation on the establishment and operation of a traceability system for tobacco products (also known as ‘track and trace’), which will require all unit packets of tobacco products to be marked with a unique identifier and their movements tracked throughout the European Union from May 2019. ‘Track and Trace’ was one of the measures implemented by the EU Revised Tobacco Products Directive. The consultation proposes that operators of retail outlets would be required to apply for an Economic Operator Identifier Code (to register as a business that sells tobacco) and a Facility Identifier Code (to register each individual premises that stores tobacco) to purchase tobacco products.
