Rural Shop Report 2019

The UK’s rural shops have invested over £271m over the last year, introducing services like contactless payment, in-store bakeries and Post Office counters to meet the needs of customers in rural areas.

The 2019 Rural Shop Report, launched by the Association of Convenience Stores, highlights how rural convenience stores provide flexible jobs for almost 140,000 people.

The importance of rural convenience stores is also highlighted in new research for this year’s report which shows that one in five people living in rural areas would have to travel more than five miles to get essential groceries if their local convenience store wasn’t there.

Key findings from the 2019 Rural Shop Report include:

  • 79% of independent rural retailers have engaged in some form of community activity over the last year
  • One in four rural shop owners work more than 70 hours per week
  • 22% of rural customers visit their local convenience store every day of the week
