Local MP Visits Community Retailer

Ashford MP Damian Green has visited a local convenience store in his constituency to discuss employment costs and business rates for independent retailers, as well as other issues affecting his convenience store business.

Vin Patel has operated the 1,000 sq ft Wady and Brett Londis store since 2003 in Charing, near Ashford in Kent. The store strives to offer local produce in all categories and has recently made investments to purchase chillers and expand the store’s fruit and veg offer. Vin is head of the local Charing Business Association, which promotes the business community for the wider village.

Vin Patel commented, "It was good to meet with Mr Green to explain how various policies and changes are going to, or likely to affect not only our business but the convenience sector in general. Most small businesses provide an essential service to their community, however due to rising costs it makes it difficult for small businesses to function. MPs need to be aware of the likely impact this could have on communities and services."

Damian Green MP said, “I know from personal experience how this store is at the heart of life in the village, and provides a range of essential services for many people in Charing. It is great to have Vin and his team in the High Street.”
