Apprenticeships levy: employer owned apprenticeships training

Apprenticeships levy: employer owned apprenticeships training

The Department for Business, Innovation and Skills are currently inviting comments on their proposal to introduce an apprenticeship levy. The levy will enable employers to choose and pay for apprenticeship training.

They are seeking views on:

  • how to pay the levy
  • how the levy should work for employers who operate across the whole of the UK
  • how to make sure that employers paying the levy have the opportunity to get more out than they put in
  • how best to give employers control of apprenticeships

In response, ACS said the increased costs from the Apprenticeship Levy are likely to compound retailer’s responses to increasing employment costs, such as delayed business investment and reduced staff numbers. ACS wants to ensure that the introduction of the Apprenticeship levy is simple to implement, and does not bring additional administrative or IT complexity or cost.  The system must provide convenience retailers with real control and ensure business participation in on-going decision-making and the implementation design phase prior to the introduction of the levy.
