The Ministry of Justice launched a consultation seeking views on the revised draft Victims Code.
Call for views on the Protection of Workers (Retail and Age-restricted Goods and Services) (Scotland) Bill.
The Bill aims to increase protection for retail workers by:
· creating a new statutory offence of assaulting, threatening, abusing, obstructing or hindering a retail worker, and
· creating a statutory aggravation to that offence where the retail worker is enforcing a statutory age restriction.
This consultation is the first stage in delivering the government’s commitment to consult on a strengthened Victims’ Code, that will be both clearer, and more responsive to the changing nature of crime and victims’ needs. The Ministry of Justice are inviting views on the initial proposals for change, and the issues the Code should focus on.
The aim of this call for evidence is to enable the government to understand the true scale of the issue of violence and abuse toward shop staff, the measures which may help prevent these crimes and the extent to which existing legislation is being used to tackle them, and to identify examples of best practice.
