Book Now for the Healthy Eating Forum

20 Nov 2007

ACS is holding a free Healthy Eating Forum on 28 November in Leicester to provide members with the opportunity to discuss the political pressures the industry faces and share views and strategies on how the sector can respond to the opportunities that Healthy Eating brings.

The Forum will bring together members of the Government, convenience industry, and suppliers to speak to delegates about their perspective on Healthy Eating.

Many retailers, whether independent, symbols or affiliated, have been hugely innovative when it comes to providing healthier food for their customers. Their hard work and investments has demonstrated the benefits for both communities and businesses of healthy eating initiatives.

David Morris, fresh produce buyer for Tates, will provide a perspective from a multiple retailer. David will discuss how Tates have made produce a key part of their offer, and provide an opportunity for delegates to discuss the challenges and opportunities that this can provide.

ACS member Jonathan Clarke, an independent retailer from Greater Manchester, will give his perspective on how independents can adapt their business to the challenge of healthy eating.

The Department of Health will give the forum an overview of the Government’s approach to tackling obesity in the UK, which includes working with the industry to provide healthier options.

A nutritionist from ACS Premier Club member Muller will explain how they are adapting their children’s range to meet the changing needs of customers for healthy eating.

In Scotland, The Scottish Executive and retailers have been in partnership promoting the Scottish Grocer’s Federation Healthy Living Program to encourage convenience stores and corner shops to promote fruit, vegetables and other healthier choices. The scheme was originally piloted in 2004 for six months and a wide variety of promotions were tested in local shops, to see which had the most impact on their customers’ diets. Ross Kerr heads up the scheme and will update the Forum on developments.

Healthy Start is another programme where people can swap Government issued vouchers for free milk, fruit and vegetables at their local shop. This scheme began as a pilot in the West Country and was considered so successful that is has since expanded nation wide. Peter Kerr, Managing Director of MRM who organise the vouchers, will provide detail on the Healthy Start scheme, which is funded by the Department of Health.

The Healthy Eating Forum is being held on 28 November at the Walkers Stadium in Leicester, taking place from 9:30am- 3:30pm, it is free to ACS members and Symbol group members, £30 to retail non-members, £50 to supplier non-members.
