National Minimum Wage

Increases in the National Minimum Wage (NMW) have a significant impact on employers, not only increasing direct costs but also reducing differentials between different levels of staff and forcing employers to work longer hours to reduce staffing levels and avoid the increased costs.

The NMW has increased from £3.60 in 1997 to £5.73 today. Above inflation increases each year are hard for retailers to absorb and ACS works closely with the Low Pay Commission to highlight the impact of increases.

The Low Pay Commission has announced that National Minimum Wage will increase on October 1 to £5.80 those aged 22 and above, £4.83 for 18 - 21 year olds and £3.57 for those aged 16 - 17. ACS' response to the consultation on the 2009 rate is available for you to download below. We are currently comiling our response to the consutlation on the rates for 2010.

If you have any information on the impact of the increase on your business call 01252 515001.
