National Minimum Wage

Increases in the National Minimum Wage (NMW) have a significant impact on employers, not only increasing direct costs but also reducing differentials between different levels of staff and forcing employers to work longer hours to reduce staffing levels and avoid the increased costs.

The NMW has increased from £3.60 in 1997 to £6.08 today. Above inflation increases each year are hard for retailers to absorb and ACS works closely with the Low Pay Commission to highlight the impact of increases.

The Low Pay Commission is currently considering its recommendations to Government for the 2012 rate. ACS has submitted oral evidence to the Commission, calling for a freeze in the rate.

If you have any information on the impact of the increase on your business call 01252 515001.
