   • Nick Clegg, MP for Sheffield Hallam, has been announced as the new leader of the Liberal Democrats. He beat his rival, Chris Hune MP by a margin of just 500 votes out of the 40,000 cast.

5. • Small Shops Commissioners visit Ludlow to Hear from Independents

   • Two members of the Conservative Commission into Small Shops on the High Street were in Ludlow last week talking to independent businesses in Shropshire.

6. • 2008 will be a difficult year for High Street Retailers

   • 17/12/2007
   • New research by accountants BDO Stoy Hayward has predicted a 7% decline for high street retail businesses. This is the equivalent of 1,400 high street stores closing throughout 2008.

7. • Darling Delays Capital Gains Tax Decision

   • 14/12/2007
   • Alistair Darling has delayed a decision on changes to capital gains tax (CGT) until the new year, the Government announced yesterday. Final details of the CGT changes, due to come into effect in April 2008, were expected to be announced before Christmas.

10. • Food Prices Rising at Highest Rate for 14 Years

    • The Office for National Statistics have reported that food prices have risen to their highest for 14 years and are currently running at more than three times the rate of inflation.

    • Ed Balls, Secretary of State for children, schools and families, is planning to review the advertising of alcohol in an effort to address the problem of binge drinking among the young.

12. • Supermarkets Admit Dairy Price Fix

    • Supermarket firms Sainsbury's and Asda, along with a number of dairy firms, have admitted to the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) that they were part of a dairy price-fixing group.

    • Alcohol Test Purchasing will be carried out across the whole of Scotland from today. 16 year old volunteers will attempt to buy alcohol from licences premises in an attempt to reduce underage sales.
