Employing People - Advice from BERR

28 Jul 2008

Most businesses are bound to encounter questions about employment, from how to take on new staff to what their responsibilities are when one of their employees is pregnant.

Many put their trust in outside advisers. Indeed, research for the Department for Business found that 40% of small companies were likely to seek external advice on employment law in the next year.

External advice can cost a lot of money, but is often unnecessary. Analysis commissioned by the Government from PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PwC) showed that employers are routinely over-complying with many of their employment law obligations – duplicating paperwork or paying professionals for advice and services that they could get for free from government sources such as the businesslink.gov website.

The ‘Employing People’ pages of the website are essential to anyone running their own business. They have been improved and updated and they have free advice and online tools designed to help with a full range of employment issues.
