Sheringham Rejects Tesco Superstore

Councillors from North Norfolk district council have taken a unanimous decision, by a vote of 17-0, against a recommendation from their officials to approve a 1500 sq metre Tesco store in Sheringham. The store was to be built on the existing Fire Station and Community Centre sites and would also see the demolition of an apartment block.
The council decision comes after a ten-year high profile campaign against supermarket development in the market town. A Sheringham local said; “This development will destroy trade at our existing town centre shops and cause traffic mayhem. We do have a need for a better food shop in Sheringham, but we need one proportional to our size (7000 people) not one designed to serve 38,000.”
James Lowman, ACS’ Chief Executive said; “ACS believes very strongly that local people should have the final say on whether or not their town needs a new supermarket. It is because of places like Sheringham that we are so committed to preventing the changes to the existing planning regime for new retail development.
“We congratulate campaigners and local people on the successful campaign they have run in Sheringham.”
