MEPs Concerned about Power of Supermarkets

01 Feb 2008

A Written Declaration laid in the European Parliament last October "on investigating and remedying the abuse of power by large supermarkets operating in the European Union" has received the support of over 438 MEPs.

It is unusual for a Written Deceleration to gain this level of support. As this is over 50% of MEPs, the Declaration will now go to the Commission who are obliged to respond.

The declaration was written by the AAI (Agribusiness Accountability Initiative Forum) EU Supermarkets Group and Responsible Purchasing Initiative who worked with Caroline Lucas and four other MEPs from France, Hungary and Poland.

A meeting will take place mid February, with next steps being reported thereafter.
ACS campaigned in support of this declaration urging UK MEPs to back it

ACS Chief Executive, James Lowman said: “It is increasingly clear that the dominance of supermarkets in EU markets is a matter of pan-European concern. We will continue to engage in discussions at the EU Parliament and Commission.”
