Shops Call for Minimum Wage Freeze

Retailers will call for a minimum wage freeze whilst appearing before the Low Pay Commission today.

The delegation which includes ACS Chief Executive James Lowman, Geoff Hallam Managing Director of Tates SPAR and Nigel Dowdney independent retailer from Norfolk, give evidence on Friday Afternoon. The hearing is part of the Low Pay Commission’s consideration in advance of making a recommendation to the Government on the minimum wage rates for 2010 and 2011.

ACS Chief Executive James Lowman said: “Retailers support the minimum wage and we are proud that as an industry we provide flexible employment opportunities for people across all parts of the community.

“In the 10 years since its inception the minimum wage has increased by an inflation busting 60%. This means that retailers struggle to afford staff, cutting back hours, losing jobs and stalling important investment that would benefit the economy and the community.”

“In these uncertain economic times the right decision is to freeze the minimum wage.”
