Environment Forum - Tuesday 8th September

03 Sep 2009

The Environment Forum gives retailers the opportunity to hear first hand from other retailers and industry experts on how meeting the environmental challenge will affect their businesses and what the benefits are of following best practice advice.

ACS forums are open to all convenience retailers and provide excellent networking and knowledge sharing opportunities whichin turn can positively affect your bottom line.

The September forum will look at the following issues:

Carrier Bags
Deborah Cook from the Welsh Assembly Government will discuss the Welsh moves to stop free single use carrier bags from being given out and Helen Davies from ACS will speak about the voluntary code of practice that non-supermarket retailers have developed that commits retailers to reducing the number of bags they give away.

Waste
Ali Scoleri from DEFRA will give an update on the Batteries Directive which is coming into force in February 2010 and will require all retailers selling more than 32kg of batteries to provide battery recycling facilities in their stores. In addition, Ian Atkinson from DEFRA will discuss the work that Government is doing on waste packaging.

Simon Digby from Heinz will also join us in this session to talk about the work Heinz has been doing to make their brand more sustainable.

Energy Efficiency

Nick Ward from Envirowise will speak about the practical things retailers can do to make their businesses more energy efficient and Alex Pitman from the Co-operative Group will join us to discuss the different ways they have made the Group’s properties more energy efficient.

We will also hear from Catherine Monaghan, Head of the North East Region for the Energy Saving Trust about the voluntary code of practice for phasing out energy inefficient lightbulbs and the work they have been doing to increase public support.
