ACS' Campaign Champions Call on MPs to Support No Change to Sunday Trading Hours
01 Jun 2006
Following the publication of the Association of Convenience Stores’ (ACS) independent critique of the Government’s cost benefit analysis ACS’ 160 Campaign Champions are appealing to MPs to support the maintenance of current Sunday trading restrictions.
The Campaign Champions are asking their local MPs to write to express their opposition to any changes to the Sunday Trading Act.
The latest campaign builds on the lobbying work that ACS has done with the Department for Trade and Industry and MPs on this significant issue.
The new campaign builds on ACS’ lobbying work to mount sustained pressure on Government and follows on from a previous drive to gather support for Early Day Motion (EDM) 1085 opposing Sunday trading deregulation.
EDM 1085 has already gathered an impressive 273 signatures, sending a powerful message to Government that there is considerable opposition to reforming the Sunday Trading Act.
James Lowman, Director of Public Affairs at ACS said: “This is an absolutely critical time for retailers to make their voices heard. The Government is in the process of making up its mind about whether or not to change the Sunday Trading Act. This EDM is absolutely vital in order to show the Government just how many MPs and voters oppose liberalisation of this important piece of legislation. We would urge every retailer to become a Campaign Champion and make a difference now.”
Kate Davies, owner of Hodnet Stores near Market Drayton and an ACS Campaign Champion, said: “As an independent retailer I feel that the current Sunday trading restrictions are really important for my store, any changes to these could have a negative impact on my business. This is a really crucial time to make our voices heard and push to maintain the current trading hours.”
