ACS Welcomes Report Set to End Unfair Parking Policies

20 Jul 2006

The Association of Convenience Stores (ACS) has welcomed the UK Commission for Integrated Transport’s (CfIT) report, released today, looking at how different modes of transport impact on the retail environment.

The study looks at parking in different retail settings, examining shoppers’ modes of transport and looking into the impact of parking charges.
One of the study’s recommendations was to redress the imbalance of free out- of- town parking and town centre parking charges by ending free parking for supermarkets.

ACS Director of Public Affairs James Lowman said: “ACS is concerned about the unfair nature of many local authorities parking policies because they allow free parking to out of town shops while charging those who wish to use the town centre.

“It does not make sense that those customers who want to use local shops are faced with heavy parking charges whilst supermarkets take advantage of offering no charge. We believe this is a distortion of the market and the Government needs to act now to remedy this situation.”
