UK Convenience Stars Prepare for Global Challenge

01 Aug 2008

ACS has announced the winners of the annual ACS Achievement Award as Laura Jupp, Assistant Brand Manager from Spar UK, winner in the retailer category, and Ben Wiseman, Supply Chain Graduate from Cadbury plc who won in the supplier category.

The ACS Achievement Award is a search for the brightest young stars in the convenience sector. The two winners were selected by an expert panel and were presented with their Achievement Award trophies by ACS Chief Executive, James Lowman on 24th July.

The two UK winners will go on to represent the UK in the Global Convenience Industry Achievement Award competition to be staged in Chicago, this autumn. They follow in the footsteps of last year's UK winners Bryony Ledger (GlaxoSmithKline) and Nick Brown (James Graven & Sons) and will be presenting to an audience of global industry experts, competing against winners from Australia, USA, Canada and New Zealand.

Laura studied marketing at Plymouth University, spending her third year on placement at General Mills UK as a brand assistant on the Jus-Rol brand. After graduating in 2007 Laura began work for SPAR UK. Of winning Laura said: “I am over the moon to have won, it’s a great achievement and I am looking forward to presenting in Chicago. “

Ben studied classics at King’s College, London, joining Cadbury straight after graduating in 2006. He is currently seconded to Green & Black's, working on the buying of organic ingredients for chocolate bars. Of winning Ben said: “I am thrilled to have won this award. I really enjoyed researching and developing my idea and since winning I have had the opportunity to present and discuss the idea with many different people. Now my goal is to win on the international stage and bring home the Ashes of the convenience industry.”

James Lowman said: “Once again the Achievement Award has unearthed talented people and some great ideas for taking our industry forward. Laura and Ben have identified some important challenges and issues for convenience store operators and have developed some compelling and practical solutions. They are worthy winners and stand a great chance of further success in Chicago.”
