ACS Fights for Small Stores at Sunday Trading Event
10 May 2006
ACS has been making the case for the maintenance of the Sunday Trading Act at an event run by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI).
ACS has cast doubt on the Governments independent research which concluded that there would be an economic benefit from liberalisation of the current Sunday Trading laws.
James Lowman, ACS’ Public Affairs and Communications Manager, said: “Maintaining the current Sunday trading laws is vital to our members. We believe the research commissioned by the DTI does not make a compelling case for change. At today’s meeting the assumptions underlying the independent research, and the exclusion of social and cultural factors from its scope, came under attack from a wide range of groups.
“There is clearly concern about the degree to which this research can be used as the basis for the Governments policy on this issue. ACS will continue to lead the fight against any relaxation of the current Sunday trading laws.”
