"Independence" Vital to Shoppers

Retailers currently campaigning for a fairer grocery marketing will be heartened by a recent survey that shows that customers are on their side.

In a poll undertaken as part of him!’s industry leading Convenience Tracking Programme, 56% of people said that having an independent-owned and operated local shop was ‘very important’ to them. Over 88% said that the choice of an independent store was was, at the very least, 'quite important’.

The findings reinforce the view that shoppers want a balance between local independent businesses and major brands.

The Association of Convenience Stores’ Chief Executive James Lowman said: "This poll is further proof of the importance of locally owned and operated businesses to local people. It supports our campaign for a fairer market that provides the very best choice for consumers.

“What customers want is central to our campaign and the Competition Commission Inquiry that is now taking place. We believe that the Commission will receive this message loud and clear when it hears from customers and looks at the data. Clearly a loss of independent outlets is to the detriment of the consumer ”
