ACS Welcomes Sensible Minimum Wage Increase

08 Mar 2007

The Association of Convenience Stores (ACS), the campaigning voice of local shops, has welcomed the 3% rise in the National Minimum Wage (NMW).

The adult minimum wage will increase by 17 pence to £5.52 in October 2007 after recommendations by the Low Pay Commission.

ACS Chief Executive James Lowman said: “This latest increase to the National Minimum Wage is sensible and, compared to previous increases, is more affordable for our sector. Retailers will be relieved not to be facing the huge rises that have taken place in previous years.

“ACS has made submissions to the Low Pay Commission and met with the commissioners to explain the impact of minimum wage increases on the sector and we feel our views have been listened to.

“Nevertheless retailers are still facing growing costs not only from the National Minimum Wage but also from the impending changes to holiday entitlement and the compulsory pension contributions. These are important costs that retailers struggle to absorb and they cannot continue rising indefinitely.”
