Local MP Greg Barker visited Ashdene Service Station in Hurst Green to show his support for an important local business. He met with Carol Smith, Director of the family owned business that has operated in the local area for 22 years. The MP discussed concerns about the pressure of rising costs in the economic downturn and the problem of crime.

Greg Barker said: “Carol and her team run a great shop and petrol station. In rural communities like Hurst Green, this Spar store provides a vital local service. I am concerned to ensure that businesses like Carol’s get the support they need from police and courts system in deterring crime. I was particularly concerned to hear about the lack of effective sanctions for fuel theft and will be raising the issue in Westminster.”

Carol Smith said: “We are delighted to host Greg at our store and show him how we serve the local community. There are a number of pressures on retail businesses and it is important to know we have the support of local politicians.”

At the visit Greg was also briefed on early discussions about supporting the setting up of a village shop in Hurst Green, on the location of the deconsecrated Catholic Church.

Carol said: “We are aware of the problem of a lack of shop in the centre of the village and will help local people to get this project off the ground if we can.”

Greg Barker said: “Getting a local shop back into the heart of the village would make a real difference for Hurst Green residents. It seems to me that there is an exciting opportunity in setting this up. It will take some planning and effort to get off the ground, but if there is a will they can count on my support.”
