ACS Promotes Role of Small Shops in Communities

At a Seminar on Revitalising Local Shopping the Association of Convenience Stores’ (ACS) Chief Executive James Lowman promoted the role of local shops in regenerating areas, and providing choice and diversity to consumers.

The Seminar, organised by Business in the Community, discussed the ways that shopping could be ‘re-localised’ away from out of town supermarkets. The panel, which James Lowman was a member of, discussed a paper by Professor Neil Wrigley from Southampton University on the effect of Tesco Expresses converted from One Stop stores on three towns in Hampshire.

ACS Chief Executive James Lowman promoted the role of independent shops in creating thriving, vibrant, and diverse communities, stressing that the choice offered by local shops is key to providing high quality shopping.

He said: “ACS believes strongly in the regeneration benefits of local shops. However, it is too simplistic to say a new Tesco Express can re-vitalise shopping in a local area, only a large range of shops can provide a vibrant shopping area with good choice to consumers.

“Independent shops play a vital role in their communities, offering a wide range of products and services. Local shops also recycle much more of their money back into the local community than multiples, providing even greater benefits to the local area.”
