ACS Chief Executive David Rae to Retire

21 Apr 2006

David Rae, the Chief Executive of the Association of Convenience Stores (ACS), has announced that he will retire from his post by the end of the year.

During his five year tenure, David Rae has presided over an increase in membership to over 32,500 retailers, a growth in Premier Club support from major manufacturers and a huge extension in the range and number of services available to ACS members. At the same time, ACS has gained widespread recognition from politicians, the retail industry and national and trade media, becoming the recognised voice of independent retailers in the UK.

Most recently, David Rae has steered ACS to success in winning an interim OFT referral of the grocery market to the Competition Commission. Other notable achievements during his term of office include the development of the Association of News Retailing (ANR) as the news arm of ACS, ensuring the convenience sector was at the heart of talks in tackling under-age alcohol purchases, helping retailers during the reform of alcohol licensing, and playing a leading role in the current campaign against the relaxation of Sunday trading laws.

David Rae said: “I have had a great five years as Chief Executive with ACS and looking back on this time I believe the organisation has achieved a great deal. I know that I leave ACS in a healthy position to move forward.”

The search for a replacement will start following a board meeting on 16 May, which will enable a smooth transition with the new Chief Executive likely to be in place before David Rae retires.
