ANR Retains Focus on Retailer Choice
12 Mar 2007
The Association of News Retailing (ANR) has responded to the National Federation of Retail Newsagent’s (NFRN) request for the Office of Fair Trading (OFT) to look into whether the newspaper supply market should be referred to the Competition Commission (CC) for a full investigation.
ANR believes the OFT’s focus must be on consumer choice and asserts that a CC inquiry could detract attention away from achieving the objective of an improved supply chain.
ANR Managing Director John Lennon said: “ANR is committed to seeing an improved news and magazines supply chain focused on retailers having choice about how they receive these products. The existing OFT reviews on the Newspaper Code of Practice and the use of Absolute Territorial Protection (ATP), offer enough opportunity to achieve our objective of retail choice.”
He continued, “We are not convinced that a Competition Commission inquiry would help retailers in this regard and indeed it may delay progress on this important issue. ANR will continue to work with the OFT on this matter and continue to represent the news interests of convenience stores, forecourts and newsagents.”
