ANR WARNS THAT DAILY MAIL ACTION WILL DAMAGE MANY SMALL RETAILERS

22 May 2008

The Association of News Retailing (ANR) has expressed concern at the recent move by Associated Newspapers to insist that wholesalers incorporate a clause in their contracts preventing retailers from selling the Daily Mail or Mail on Sunday above the marked retail price.

Claiming that this shows scant regard for the diversity of the newspaper retailing industry across different parts of the country, John Lennon, Managing Director at ANR, said: “In some rural locations and in order to ensure they survive, some retailers are forced to put a penny or two on the cover price of newspapers. If they do that now, following the insistence of Associated Newspapers, they will no longer be able to sell these particular titles.

“On top of this, the Daily Mail on Saturday and the Mail on Sunday already give the worst trade terms of any newspaper at only 21%. It is a major concern, because there are retailers who will just not be able to survive this kind of action from a publisher.”
