Political Work

ACS is an established, credible and influential voice for the local shop sector in Government. ACS ensures that local shops are heard at national, local and European level. This is achieved by remaining plugged into key decision makers within Government and Parliament.

Our strength is based in our well researched and presented arguments, whether that be in putting the issues that matter to retailers on the Governments agenda or being first and most effective in reacting to the issues of the day.

ACS is also a strong campaigning organisation, providing dedicated and passionate members with the support they need to be their own spokespeople on the issues they care about. click here to find out more.

ACS is always open to hear the views of retailers, we are only as strong as our members so join today. If you have any questions or comments our public affairs team will be happy to help, click here to email the team.

Shoplifter Crime

Crime affects all retailers. However, crimes in convenience stores not only cost retailers money but also have a negative effect on the community, causing fear and distress to both shop staff and residents.

ACS believes shop crime should be at the heart of the Government’s anti-social behaviour programme.

Employee Employment

In recent years employment costs have significantly risen for employers through increases in the National Minimum Wage and other new employment legislation.

Every piece of new employment legislation adds to the cumulative burden of employment costs and ACS works to make sure Government are aware of the effect of rising labour costs and the need to limit both employment and administrative burden.

Highstreet Grocery Market Inquiry

Over recent years the grocery market has become increasingly consolidated in the hands of a few large retailers. Today the ‘Big Four’ Supermarkets – Tesco, Asda, Sainsbury’s and Morrisons – control 75% of the grocery market.

This has coincided with a significant decrease in the number of independent convenience stores with 4,000 stores closing since 2000 overall, but over 9,500 unaffiliated independents.

Beer Racking Responsible Retailing

Many products that convenience store are subject to age restricted sales. This means it is the retailer’s responsibility to check that the person buying is legally old enough to purchase the goods.

It is vital important that retailers are aware of the policy developments when it comes to alcohol, tobacco and proof of age, otherwise they could face legal sanctions.
