Carbon Pollution

The British government points out that climate change is a serious problem that affects us all. It states that there is strong evidence that human emissions of greenhouse gases are changing the world’s climate.

To help us come to some reasoned judgements on the evidence a website has been launched by Government Chief Scientific Adviser Professor Sir John Beddington. The resource explains both where evidence is well established and where findings and projections remain subject to greater uncertainty. The site is at http://www.bis.gov.uk/go-science/climatescience.

The main greenhouse gas is carbon dioxide (CO2) produced when we burn fossil fuels like coal, oil and gas for energy.

All businesses and individuals need to act on reducing CO2 emissions by minimising energy use as much as reasonably possible. This can be done by such means as cutting down on heating, electricity and petrol/diesel driven vehicles.

Businesses should ensure that any relevant installations; refits and maintenance etc are assessed for the purpose of minimising energy consumption wherever and whenever it is possible to do so.

All employees should be required to minimise energy use in accordance with the Employer’s rules and procedures.

Ideas for producing appropriate rules and procedures can be obtained by visiting www.carbontrust.co.uk.
