As part of their Convenience Tracker Programme (CTP), him! Research have provided ACS with an up-to-date best practice checklist for the fruit & veg category. The following is based on their most recent research in which they surveyed 30,000 shoppers across the UK.

Are you making the most of this category?

1. Stock fruit and vegetables to a very high standard or they will detract from the rest of the store. To see how to do Fruit & Veg well you should look at any supermarket…and that will be the standard that shoppers expect!

2. Approx two thirds of shoppers stated they want to eat healthier foods. In many cases they did not think they were offered this in convenience.

3. Replacing confectionery with fruit on the top shelf till impulse points. Replace old two metre fruit and veg unit at back of site with two metre produce island at store entrance – sales increased by 500% (Independent retailer – The Wise Food Initiative, 2004)

4. Put fruit & veg at front of store to build awareness and credibility.

5. Allocate a Fresh champion in each store.

6. Give apples away – good local marketing.

7. Try a ‘health zone’ in store with single serve fruit.
